Proudie has an uncanny adventure on a rainy late night involving mysterious visitors and his tenant who is a doctor. This is a typical ghost story for the time period. ![]() This is mainly the story of another miserable couple who come to a horrible end, with a bit of the supernatural thrown in almost as an afterthought. A mystery involving a woman's name that was etched in an ancient pane of glass. Another unpleasant couple in an unpleasant marriage. A really excellent set up for a story about some truly miserable people who are visited by an unexpected housekeeper. Nothing is too spooky or unexpected, but it is nicely done. While there aren't any surprises the story has an interesting concept. For Claude, a clerk, The Reign of Terror has become background noise, or has it? Claude starts to have nightmares he believes are sent by his murdered paramour. The story takes place during the French Revolution. Her style evokes particular times and places with an economy of words, which is the mark of a good short story teller. Bowen's atmospheric writing style makes this compilation worth checking out. ![]()
